Music

Our Intent

At Mayhill Junior School, we strive to allow our children to express themselves through the avenue of music by following our three music mottos:

Through a variety of inclusive musical experiences, we teach the children of Mayhill to be musically curious, open minded and to express opinions (Think Music – underpinned by an understanding of the Musical elements), develop their resilience and independence whilst learning how to play a wide variety of instruments on their journey from Yr 3 to 6 (Becoming More Musical), and to enjoy exploring, composing and performing with and to others (Making Music). Music at Mayhill builds and nurtures our children’s collaboration skills and the sense of belonging within their class, school and local communities by connecting with others through the experience and enjoyment of music.

We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the importance of all types of classical, modern and cultural music, so that all children respect that music is an avenue through which they, and others, may wish to express themselves.

Through inclusive weekly singing assemblies, annual productions (Christmas – Lower School, Summer – Upper school), whole class instrumental tuition, instrumental and vocal peripatetic lessons, exciting extra-curricular clubs, trips, involvement in local community events and an engaging curriculum for all, the children of Mayhill will leave with increased self-confidence and memories that will last forever.

Mayhill are lucky to work closely with Rocksteady who currently provide peripatetic lessons for 75 pupils from years 3 to 6. Those enrolled have a 30 minute lesson per week and will learn either the electric guitar, keyboard, drums or vocals and enjoy playing in a happy, supportive environment with their friends. The lessons will be at a different time each week so that students don’t miss the same curriculum lesson each time. Each term culminates in a performance to their parents, teachers and peers on our Mayhill stage which proves to be a huge confidence booster. Check out more information here. As a school, we also help Rocksteady with their recruitment and have therefore been able to provide ALL pupils at Mayhill with a Rocksteady experience.

Throughout the year, ALL children at Mayhill get the opportunity to learn different instruments within their class music lessons under the instruction of Mr. Halls from Hampshire Music Service as part of the Listen2Me teaching programme.

Mayhill is also pleased to offer weekly instrumental lessons in brass, woodwind, string instruments and guitar with Hampshire Music Service. Lessons last for 20 minutes each week and are either an individual lesson or a small group lesson. The lessons will be at a different time each week so that students don’t miss the same curriculum lesson each time. Hampshire Music Service also offer their own instrument hire services.

Weekly lessons in keyboard/piano as well as vocals are also available.
