Magic Magnets

In science this half term, we have been learning about how different metals are magnetic (iron, nickel, steel and cobalt). Over the last two weeks we have been learning about fair tests so that we can measure if distances change the amount of magnetic force needed as well as if the mass of an object affects the force. To do this we have been using lots of the teacher’s paperclips. In our books, we have drawn tables so that we can input our results, each group’s experiment was slightly different as we got to choose how many paperclips we used for the mass investigation and the distance of the paperclip for our first experiment.

Through these experiments we have learnt that the further away an object is from the magnet the greater the force needed to attract it, as well as the greater the mass of an object the greater the force needed. We are looking forward to more investigations in our upcoming lessons.
